The theme of night I think is that the cruelty of man is unknown. The level of human cruelty can be pushed to an unknown extent when the situation provokes it. I feel the theme teaches us that we need to learn from the Holocaust of the cruelty of man so we can understand how inhuman and cruel people can become. With understanding this we can try to make sure such an atrocity never happens again.
